Ultrasound Q & A

What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging exam in obstetrics that uses sound waves to create highly detailed images of the baby, the placenta, the organs and soft tissues. This can be done with 3-D and 4-D images. Pictures are taken to record the images of the baby to allow you to bond with your baby in an intimate way. A biophysical profile is utilized later in the pregnancy to assess the condition of the baby.

In gynecology, the ultrasound can give images of the ovaries, uterus, the bowel, and help understand the causes of pelvic pain and abnormal bleeding. It can look for cysts, tumors, and fibroids. Also 3-D and 4 -D images are available.

Sonograms do not emit radiation like Xrays and CT scans so they are safe. Sonograms can be done on the abdomen in 2nd and 3rd-trimester pregnancies. For better visualization, gynecology and first-trimester obstetric sonograms are done vaginally. Ultrasound pictures are taken to record the ultrasound images. The sonogram images are seen on a large flat screen conveniently and comfortably.
